What is Information Literacy?

The requirements and expectations of users within an academic library have undergone significant and far-reaching change through the latter half of the 20th century and into the 21st. As librarians, we are acutely aware of the fact that we need to do more than simply show you how to use a catalogue or show them where resources are. Our role has expanded greatly and we now must have the skills to discover and evaluate new and existing resources, have the knowledge to apply them to a variety of contexts and also be able to assist you to solve problems in real world situations. The more information which becomes available, the more crucially important these skills are. It has become apparent that the ability of a librarian to build relationships with all users and be able to seek innovative ways to work and collaborate with them is essential to the future success of any library.

At Atkinson, we understand these requirements and our highly skilled and qualified staff are available to help you with specialised knowledge of subjects and current academic programs. We can empathise with student and academics alike, having been in situations where we have both studied and conducted research. Whether it is an undergraduate paper or assisting academics meet their research obligations, such as PBRF, we have the expertise to offer assistance and ongoing support to these and everything in between.

This blog has been created as an informal means of complementing existing teaching and learning programs, provide additional information for all users about staff, their particular subject areas, as well as a platform for users to provide feedback about our services and to tell us what you want!
